Paul Henry RHA (1876-1958)
A BOG ROAD, c. 1929-1930 oil on board signed lower left; faintly inscribed in pencil on
reverse 8 by 10.50in. (20.32 by 26.67cm)
Provenance: Private Collection, USA; Clarke Auction Gallery , Larchmont, NY, USA, 4 May
2009 (lot no. untraced); Adamʼs & Bonhams, Dublin, 10 June 2009, lot 10; Private
collection
The setting of this scene is almost certainly Connemara, the picture probably having been
made from sketches done earlier, as was
Henryʼs usual practice and is dated c.1929-30 on stylistic grounds. During this period,
Henry held a number of exhibitions in the United States (for details see S. B. Kennedy,
Paul Henry: with a catalogue of the Paintings, Drawings, Illustrations, Yale University
Press, New Haven and London, 2009, pp. 320-321.) and this picture was almost certainly
included in one of those exhibitions, but its identity is unknown.
On the reverse, in pencil, are the markings ʻCombridgeʼ, ʻ£15-15-0ʼ, ʻ3ʼ and possibly A Bog
Road, but the latter is very indistinct. A Bog Road is listed as A Western Landscape and is
numbered 1236 in S. B. Kennedyʼs ongoing catalogue of Henryʼs oeuvre.
