The wavy rim over plain body engraved with crest of pegasus for Powerscourt, on leaf-capped hoof feet, London, 1759, maker’s mark, ‘DH’.19½oz troy (604g) (2); height The crest is that of EdwardWingfield, 2nd Viscount Powerscourt (1729-1764). Wingfield was the son of RichardWingfield, 1st Viscount Powerscourt. He was educated at St John’s College, Cambridge and succeeded his father in the viscountcy in 1751. As well as taking a seat in the Irish House of Lords, Richard also stood for election for the British House of Commons, and in 1756 he was successfully returned for Stockbridge, a seat he held until 1761. As with many of the Irish nobility, Richard divided his time between his estates in Ireland and further interests in London. While the family were significant patrons of Dublin’s silversmiths, they also patronised the workshops of the higher quality London makers, such as David Hennell.
