An engraving published in 1781, depicting William of Orange crossing the River Boyne on a white horse, with the death of Marshal Schomberg in the foreground, mounted. The Battle of the Boyne was painted in 1778 by the Anglo-American artist Benjamin West. West’s depiction of William of Orange on his white horse became the iconic image of Protestant Unionism. The painting was widely copied and distributed throughout the nineteenth century. The original work by West hangs at Mount Stewart, Newtownards.
