James Joyce,
Ulysses
signed first
German edition
number one in
three volumes.
Basel: Rhein-Verlag,
1927, original half
morocco over
patterned paper
boards.
Rhein-Verlag, Basel,
1927. The first
edition in German,
limited to 1,100
copies, of which
the first 100 were
signed by Joyce. This is number 1 of the 100 signed copies. The German
edition was the first translation of Ulysses to be published. Rhein-Verlag
held a competition to find a translator, finally selecting Georg Goyert,
who subsequently worked with Joyce on the translation in Ostend
during the summer of 1926. Joyce was pleased with the edition and the
publication was a success, selling out in three weeks. Issued in three
volumes, each octavo in quarter brown morocco over marbled boards;
raised bands at spine with green calf gilt lettering labels; red cloth page
markers; top edges gilt, some gatherings still uncut. Edges a little
rubbed, corners bumped, upper hinge of Vol. I partially split, but an
excellent set overall, and extremely rare with Joyce’s signature. 8 x 6in.

James Joyce,
Anna Livia Plurabelle
limited first edition of 50 copies New
York: Princeton University Press for
Crosby Gaige, 1928. Printed on light
green paper watermarked ‘Alexandra
Japan Made in U.S.A.’. Original black cloth
gilt, spine lettered and decorated in gilt,
boards with borders in blind, upper board
with central gilt design, top edge gilt,
others uncut.
Anna Livia Plurabelle. Preface by Padraic
Colum. First edition, limited to 50 copies
of which this is 6, on light green paper.
Slocum and Cahoon note that: “Of these
50 copies [on light green paper] probably
6 were offered for sale by the publisher.
These were numbered 1 to 6, with the
following notice on p.[iv] in the
handwriting of Crosby Gaige: This is one
of 6 copies on green paper. Crosby Gaige.’ ‘The remaining 44 copies were
presumably given away by Crosby Gaige, with the exception of a few
which were remaindered to the Chaucer Head Book Shop, New York, in
1938 by Random House.’ However, this copy is simply numbered ‘6’, and
does not bear the publisher’s statement on the limitation page. Very few
of the 50 copies were numbered, and none were signed by Joyce. The
precise reason Gaige printed a small edition on green paper is unknown.
A clear possibility is that he offered the green paper copies as a limited
edition to be sold at an inflated price. Joyce would be unaware of the
edition as he was not asked to sign them and Gaige could retain all the
proceeds for himself. Rare, only one copy is recorded at auction by ABPC
since 1975. This fragment forms pages 532-554 of Finnegans Wake.
