attractive woodcut border and with the full-page royal arms on
verso, pages (6), 239, (1, blank), (6), without the first and last
blank leaves, 4to, contemporary unlettered calf, the sides ruled
in blind: with a little wear at the headbands and corners but the
binding sound and strong and otherwise an attractive copy in
original state with a neat contemporary inscription on the title-
page and a signed inscription by Robert Callaghan dated 1726
on the front endpaper.
STC 766. The first appearance in England of Aristotle on rhetoric.

The second edition of this controversial work, first published 1686, on
the teachings of the church fathers. It remained on the Index till 1948.
Dupin (1657-1719), a French theologian of Gallican sympathies, whose
vast ‘Nouvelle Bibliotheque’ aroused much opposition, notably from
Bossuet. Before his death he entered into friendly relations with
Archbishop Wake in an unsuccessful attempt to achieve reunion between
the Anglican and RC Churches.

Defending the English Roman Catholics against the charge of
conspiracy, especially as brought by Titus Oates, being a reply to
Jurieu’s La politique du clergé de France. A second part was later
published. “When it became obvious that the ‘Popish Plot’ was a
gigantic fraud, Arnauld (1612-94), then living in the Netherlands, wrote
his ‘Apologie’, in which he vigorously denounced Southwell, being
under the erroneous impression that the latter was one of Coleman’s
prosecutors … Southwell was able to prove the contrary … (and in) a
letter to Henri Justel, Arnauld apologised somewhat reservedly. “ -
