His first published work. Gisborne (1758-1846), Anglican priest, one of
the Clapham Sect, fought for the abolition of the slave trade and was a
close friend of William Wilberforce and Hannah More. His ethical
writings were directed against Paley’s expediency, and endeavoured to
provide a basis of absolute right, but his criterion is mainly utilitarian.
