A rare newsheet. Wing R 788, has L and EN only - none in Ireland.
Sweeney 4457. The London edition of the same year, Wing R 787A, is
known by the Yale copy only. The letter is dated from Liverpool, March
3rd, 1690. It relates that on receiving intelligence that the Irish forcrs
had crossed the Shannon, two English armies led by Ginkel and
Douglas engaged the Irish on Friday 27 February at a place called
Ballimore: “ …The Irish being about 20,000 and ours about 12,000,
where they had a very hot engagement for five hours. The Irish behaved
themselvees brave enough, for after they were broken, they rallied again
very vigorously three times; but were forced to retire to Athlone, unto
which place they were pursued to the very walls … It is said, Sarsfield is
mortally wounded: but ‘tis certain that General Ginkle was brought to
Dublin on Sunday-night in a coach, sorely wounded. “
