cut close affecting sigature and catchwords only, internally in very
good to fine state.
Apparently the only edition. ESTC locates copies at C, L, O / CSmh, IU
and CtY-Sm. Remarkably uncommon in commerce. Toole Stott 2057
describes a copy without the frontispiece and remarks, under his entry
2054 for Hughes’s The Compleat Horseman, 1772, upon the latter’s
‘lifting’ of the text of Jackson’s book for the latter part of his own treatise.

Views in Affghaunistaun,
&. c. &c. &c. from sketches taken during the campaign of the
Army of the Indus.
London. Published by W. H. Allen … and T.
M’Lean
[1841]
With a partly coloured lithographed frontispiece, a tinted
lithographed pictorial title, a lithographed dedication leaf, a
map,26 tinted lithographed plates of views and one text
illustration, 17 leaves of letterpress, small folio, the text and plates
loose in the original quarter dark maroon morocco, gilt, lettered
in gilt on the upper board, yet in quite clean and fresh state
though a few plates do bear very faint marks of foxing in the
blank margins.
With an extra tinted lithographed plate, “North Gate of the Fort of
Bukkur on the Indus”, not called for and not mentioned in Abbey,
Travel,506. With the contemporary signature of “Williams / 41 Regt’
on the front endpaper. The 41st Regiment (The Welsh) served in the First
Afghan War, 1839-42, gaining battle honours at Candahar, Ghuznee and
Cabool. Each of the plates in this copy carry in the lower blank margin a
very faint title written in pencil in a neat hand, presumably that of
Williams. In some cases the written title differs from that on the plate,
suggesting, presumably, personal knowledge. A rare series of views which
was also issued with the litho plates coloured: copies are rarely found
complete in either state.
