Chamberlaine, in Smock-Alley,

pages xxiv, (12),204: (12),220,2 vols, 12mo, contemporary calf,
with labels, gilt: the labels worn and one upper joint weak but
still firm: a very good copy.
A satirical novel famous for its thinly-veiled description of the Hell Fire
Club and one of the most famous and widely-reprinted novels of the
later 18C. At the time of publication, Johnstone, born in Co. Limerick,
was living in Dublin, but it does not seem likely that the Irish edition
precedes the London printing – partly because this edition carries a
preface ‘by the publisher’ clearly written from London. But the Dublin
edition may carry some authorial weight, nonetheless, if Johnstone was
on hand to correct or alter the novel which brought him such sudden
fame.

First published 1799. This second edition is scarce, with ESTC recording

Ireland, and two elsewhere: NNC-RB and CSmH. Jebb (1775-1833),
native of Drogheda, was an active member of the historical society, and
the experience he acquired from taking part in its proceedings well
equipped him for public debate. For his services in maintaining order in
his parish, Mogorbane, Co Tipperary, during the disturbances following
the 1822 famine, he was made Bishop of Limerick. On 10 July 1824 he
made a speech in the House of Lords on the Tithe Commutation Bill,
which Wilberforce described as ‘one of the most able ever delivered in
parliament’ and which was seen as a powerful defence of the position of
the Irish establishment (ODNB).
