Jones was an important influence in the development of an anti-
Ricardian tradition in economics. He was critical of the deductive
method employed by Ricardo and others, and advocated greater use of
induction. Like Malthus, he warned of the dangers of hasty and
premature generalizations. He was also critical of Ricardian absolutism,
although he did not adopt an extreme relativist position. Against Ricardo
he asserted the harmony of interests between landlords and tenants, and
the role of social institutions in the determination of rents. Between 1833
and 1840 he published four pamphlets on the commutation of tithes and
was associated with J. E. D. Bethune in drafting the Tithe Commutation
Act (1836). With Frankland Lewis and George Nicholls he was one of
the commissioners responsible for implementing the Poor Law
Amendment Act. This involved both a heavy administrative burden and
much public obloquy (DNB).
