[CAMPBELL (Thomas) ].
A philosophical survey of the
south of Ireland, in a series of letters to John Watkinson, M. D.
Dublin: Printed for W. Whitestone, W. Sleater … (and 16 others),
1778

pages xvi, 478, (1, blank), 8vo, contemporary calf, with label,
gilt: a little wear at the headbands but the binding sound and
strong and otherwise a bright, fresh copy.
Forty five letters describing Dublin and visits to Tara, Kildare, Carlow,
Kilkenny, Cork. Campbell (1733–95), Church of Ireland clergyman,
native of Glack, Co. Tyrone, friend of Dr Johnson, was a shrewd,
somewhat contemptuous observer. Alongside sketches of the social life,
local traditions, and historical background of Ireland, he called for free
trade for the island, relaxation of penal codes, and a union between
Great Britain and Ireland. The volume also contained, for the first time
in print, Johnson’s epitaph on Goldsmith. Boswell styled it ‘a very
entertaining book, which has, however, one fault — that it assumes the
fictitious character of an Englishman’ (ODNB).
