The scarce first edition of an early work by the Dublin-born Lardner
(1793-1859), successful populariser of science and encyclopaedist,
educated at Trinity, Dublin, elected professor of natural philosophy &
astronomy at the newly founded London University. Dedicated to
Charles Babbage, a second edition followed in 1828.

With a folding table and 28 folding engraved plates, pages (2),
360, [353-360], 361-435, (1, blank): 268, (24), wanting
imprimatur leaf, 4to, contemporary half calf over marbled
boards: binding heavily rubbed, upper joint cracked but holding:
internally very good-nice.
Includes Kino’s map entitled “A passage by land to California
discovered by the Rev. Fathr. Eusebius Francis Kino Jesuit between the
years 1698 & 1701”. Jones (c. 1695–1727), scientific editor, abridged the
Philosophical Transactions from 1700 to 1720 in a two-volume work
that first appeared in 1721. In his preface he is very severe on Benjamin
Motte, a printer, who had issued a bad abridgement of the same portion
just before his appeared. Motte published a Reply in 1722. (ODNB).

In Latin and Greek in parallel columns, the title-page printed in
red and black with large vignette and with some text engravings
of coins and medals, pp (8), xliii, (1, blank), 987, (1, blank),
with half-title, folio, strongly bound in contemporary vellum-
backed panelled calf, with label, gilt: with the usual foxing,
otherwise a strongly bound and very good-nice copy.
A well-regarded critical edition of the work of Philostratus or Lucius
Flavius Philostratus, (c. 170-247), called “the Athenian”, a Greek
sophist of the Roman imperial period.

Cornelis Cornelissen van den Steen (1567-1637), Flemish biblical
exegete. These two volumes of his renowned series of commentaries were
first published (posthumously) in 1642 and 1645 respectively. His works
have owed their enduring popularity, especially among preachers, to
their clarity, deep spirituality, and allegorical and mystical exegesis,
