contrasting label, gilt: a very good copy, signed by Hoyle on
verso of title-page.
“No copies of this book are genuine, but what are signed by the
author”. This fourteenth edition was the last to be signed by Hoyle: in
subsequent editions his signature was reproduced from a woodblock.
Hoyle (1671/2-1769), the first to write scientifically on whist, or indeed
any card game, was a careless editor, but possessed a vigorous and
original writing style. He seems to have profited by the experience of the
best players of the day, and introduced many improvements in his
successive editions. His laws of 1760, revised by members of White’s
and Saunders’s clubs, were the standard rules for whist until 1864,
when they were superseded by the code drawn up by the Arlington and
Portland clubs (ODNB).
