ROCHON (Alexis Marie).
A Voyage to Madagascar
and the East Indies … to which is added, M. Brunel’s Memoir
of the Chinese Trade … Translated by Joseph Trapp.
Illustrated with an original map of Madagascar, drawn by M.
Robert. Translated from the French, by Joseph Trapp, A. M.
Printed for Edward Jeffery …,
1793
With a large folding engraved map (short closed tear without
loss), pages lxiv, (17) - 406 and errata leaf, complete thus, with
the half-title, 8vo, contemporary calf, gilt spine, with
contrasting label, gilt: a very good copy.
Rochon was sent to the East Indies to conduct a hydrographic survey
of the Indian Ocean. His account of Madagascar, written with a view
to showing the advantages which might be derived from French
settlements there, includes much valuable information on the flora of
the island, including a chapter on the cocoa tree, a detailed account of
the sugar plantations, describes the processing of the sugar cane and
recommends that the steam engine could be employed to great
advantage in the sugar factories. He was, as Cox notes, “a member of
several learned Academies in Europe. ” His contributions to the
history and contemporary state of Madagascar are considerable. His
work is also notable for reprinting Roberts’ 1727 map of the island.
However, it is probably most interesting for its translation by Trapp, of
Brunel’s important and early memoir on the China trade.
