Theodoret of Cyrus (or Cyrrhus or Kyros), c. 393-c. 460, an
important writer in the domains of exegesis, dogmatic theology,
church history and ascetic theology. His Christological opinions have
been a matter of controversy, but it is now conceded that he held
Nestorian views but abandoned them circa 451. His historical works
include a “Religious History” (a collection of biographies of monks)
and a “Church History” which is important for the many authentic
documents used in it.

An appropriate subject, monasticism and religious orders for women,
nunneries, convents, etc, for this French ecclesiastic (1636-1703), noted
for a temper which led him to delight in polemics.

The title-page with a fine, deep woodcut border enclosing
Badius’s large woodcut of a printing press in use, folios (8),
191, (1, blank), folio, old half roan: with a short clean tear
without loss in two leaves and the running headline touched
only very slightly on just a very few leaves, otherwise a well-
margined and very good-nice copy.
Adams K14 (2 copies). An uncommon edition of the collected
works, ascetical, homiletic, poetical, biographical, etc., all
pervaded by the devotional spirit which finds its classic expression
in the ‘Imitation’, of this ascetical writer (1380-1471). This
edition follows that of Pirckheimer (1494) and carries his
intrroduction as well as a short prologue by Jodocus Badius, the
publisher of the present edition.

Observations and soundings in the North Atlantic and West Indies,
between Madeira and Brazil, and at the Falkland Islands. Thomson
was chief scientific officer on the ‘Challenger’ during its famous
voyage to inspect the physical and biological conditions of the sea-bed.
These volumes, providing the earliest account of the voyage, preceded
the official account by three years and were the only ones Thomson
lived to complete. They represent probably the most important
oceanographic work of the nineteenth century.
