One of the important 19C English travellers in Ethiopia, Parkyns spent
three years (1843-46) in the north of the country and provides excellent
descriptions of the country, people, manners, customs, etc. “Personally
acquainted with Dajazmach Webe, the ruler of Tegre, and other
prominent Tegrean nobles whom he portrays, he provides us with a
history of Tegre seen from the inside” - Pankhurst. An important book
which “corroborated certain passages in the Travels of James Bruce,
which had hitherto been regarded as fabulous”. DNB.
