Between 1899 and 1902 Peters, in many respects the German Stanley,
explored regions between the Zambesi and Limpopo Rivers with a view
to commercial exploitation. His detailed account of ancient cities and
gold mines visited attest his belief that the most ancient nations of
history obtained their gold, ivory and other precious goods from South
Africa.

A pioneer Scottish missionary, Arnot, seeking healthy places in which to
establish stations, travelled from Natal in 1884, crossed the Zambezi
above the Victoria Falls, followed the river to Lialui and traversed the
country to the north-west. His journey supplemented in some respects
those of the Portuguese scientific explorers.
