a woodcut portrait of Thomas Venner in text, pages (2), 34, 33-34
(bis, i. e. the final leaf duplicated with, one presumes, the loss of
an advert leaf at end), small 4to, original printed paper wrappers:
the wrappers browned, a pale old waterstain on portrait and title-
leaf, wanting backstrip, stitching broken, otherwise a very good
copy.
Colonel Blood, 1618-80, born in Sarney, Co. Meath, adventurer,
attempted, perhaps at Buckingham’s instigatiion, to assassinate the Duke
of Ormonde, formed an elaborate plot in 1671 to steal the crown jewels,
and actually made off with the crown and globe, but was arrested. He
was pardoned through the intervention of Charles II.

victories obtained by the Lord Generall Cromwell, Governor-
Generall of Ireland and the Parliaments forces under his
command there. From Wednesday the first of August 1649 to the

SECOND EDITION, pages (30), 612, 4to, contemporary calf,
gilt spine: with a small faint stamp on the title-page, a paper fault
on two preliminary leaves, both with slight loss, the binding
rubbed and worn but very strong and otherwise a very good copy.
Willems 1589: the first of two issues he describes, the one issued without
leaf *1 and with the preliminary leaves in the order he cites. In Simon’s
Histoire critique, first published in 1678 in Paris and suppressed, he
denied that Moses was the author of the Pentateuch, arguing from the
existence of duplicate accounts of the same incident and the variations of
style. He was the greatest philologist of the 17C and is regarded as the
founder of modern textual criticism.

Sims (1741-1820), native of County Down, studied at Leiden, returned
to Ireland and practised for nine years in Tyrone, moved to London and,
greatly assisted by John Coakley Lettsom, soon acquired a lucrative
practice. In 1774 he was appointed physician to the General Dispensary
in Aldersgate Street (established by Lettsom) and also served as
phhysician to the Surrey Dispensary. His ‘Discourse’ is a critique of
current methods in anatomy. A second edition followed in the same year,
as did French and Italian translations (ODNB). ESTC has no Irish
holdings.
