Works relating to Bruges (Belgium) were
shown in the artist’s major retrospective
exhibition in 1976 in the Ulster Museum,
Belfast and the Municipal Gallery of
Modern Art, Hugh Lane, Dublin.The artist
travelled with his father to Belgium on a
business trip in 1931 where he was
exposed to Flemish painters, such as
Rogier van der Weyden. He retuned to
Belguim between 1961 and 1972 where
he painted a series of works based on the
city of Bruges.The Hendriks Gallery show
in 1965 comprised 35 works in oil several
of which referenced Bruges including the
present example.
