Howard Helmick (1845-1907)

Born in the United States, Helmick attended
the Ohio Mechanics Institute in Cincinnati
and later travelled to Paris and London where
he became friendly with artist James Abbott
McNeill Whistler. He exhibited at London’s
Royal Academy and several of the titles
shown there suggest Irish subjects.The RHA,
Dublin lists exhibits by him in 1879 and 1889
and his time spent in Cork was recorded by a
writer friend, Hawthorne.

Cork native James Mahoney is best known for
his wonderful watercolours in the collection
of the National Gallery of Ireland which depict
the visit of Queen Victoria to the Industrial
Exhibition in Dublin (1853).
