106 Rory Breslin (b.1963) THE BORU MASK, 2014 bonze; (no. 3 from an edition of 3) signed, dated and numbered 33.50 by 22in. (85.1 by 55.9cm) The Boru Mask is a six times life-size interpretation of Edward Smyth’s stone depiction of Brian Boru. The head, guarding the East entrance of the Chapel Royal in Dublin Castle, is a representation of a crowned and expressive Brian Boru. Paired with him at the entrance is St. Patrick, which underlines the high regard in which the medieval king was held in the nineteenth century. The Chapel Royal of Dublin Castle was designed by renowned architect Francis Johnston, and was opened on Christmas Day 1814 by the King’s representative in Ireland, Lord Lieutenant Whitworth. €5,000-€7,000 (£3,570-£5,000 approx.)
