WHYTE'S IRISH & INTERNATIONAL ART 26 FEBRUARY 2018

IRISH & INTERNATIONAL ART · 26 FEBRUARY 2018 AT 6 PM 109 Niall O’Neill (b.1952) VIKING II cast phosphor bronze; (unique) 22 by 17 by 9.50in. (55.9 by 43.2 by 24.1cm) Originally based on a maquette commissioned by developer P Murphy for Finglas this sculpture evokes the memory of Viking power in Ireland. The piece illustrates the two elements of Norse power, the longship and the sword. It gave them both military invincibility and commercial success. No horned helmets are represented here - the helmet, based on one found at an Anglo-Saxon boat burial site in England (Sutton Hoo), is a more accurate representation of a ceremonial type of helmet worn at the time. The sword is based on types excavated in Dublin, samples of which can be viewed in the National Museum of Ireland. Other aspects of the Viking’s clothing reflect the huge trade with Eastern Europe, the Baltic and the Arab world at the time. It is also influenced by Sassanian sculptural reliefs. €4,000-€6,000 (£2,860-£4,290 approx.) Click Here for Large Images & To Bid Lot 109
