Books 257 Hemphill, William Despard. Stereoscopic illustrations of Clonmel and surrounding country: Including Abbeys, Castles and Scenery. With descriptive letterpress. Wl. Curry & Co. Upper Sackville-Street & Thomas Cranfield, Grafton St., Dublin, 1860. Original quarter morocco, heavily decorated in gilt, slightly faded. Extremely rare. William Despard Hemphill, a Clonmel surgeon, was the most renowned Irish amateur photographer of the mid-19th century. This volume is among the World’s earliest published works featuring stereoscopic photographs. In addition to the Clonmel views, it contains photographs of Cahir, Cashel, Holy Cross, Mitchelstown and Lismore. It is an extremely rare work as it was privately published and likely only distributed by Hemphill to a small circle of friends in South Tipperary.
