The letter on notepaper headed 15A Grafton Street, Bond Street. W. in Stoker’s hand, thanking Mrs Duhan for her ‘charming’ flowers; together with Hatton, Joseph. Henry Irving’s Impressions of America. Sampson Low, London, 1884. two volumes. (3) Bram Stoker first met Henry Irving in Dublin in 1876 following his favourable review of Irving’s Hamlet, then on a run in Dublin at the Theatre Royal. Irving invited Stoker to dine with him at the Shelbourne Hotel and the two became firm friends. Two years later Stoker became Irving’s theatre manager and part-time personal secretary. Irving is believed to have been the inspiration for Dracula and Stoker hoped in vain that Irving would play the Count on stage. The letter in this lot illustrates the two mens’ close working relationship, Stoker has dashed off an acknowledgement to Irving’s admirer in his spidery hand and passed it to Irving for his quick but clear signature.
