A George III smoothbore percussion musket, the barrel with Birmingham proof marks, the lockplate stamped ‘Warrented’ and with an elephant carrying a castle, on walnut stock. Total length 55in. (139.7cm) The Company of Merchants Trading to Africa was chartered in 1750 to take advantage of the African slave trade. They purchased large numbers of muskets, manufactured in Birmingham, as trade goods. Shipments of gunpowder, lead, rum, and other trade goods were shipped by the Company out of Bristol as payment to slavers for slaves. Estimate €400-€600 approx (£350-£520 approx.)
