WHYTE'S THE SUMMER SALE MONDAY 9 JULY 2018
THE SUMMER SALE - 9 JULY 2018 109 Markey Robinson (1918-1999) FIVE WOMEN, 1983 oil with gouache on board signed lower left 14.75 by 22.50in. (37.5 by 57.2cm) Provenance: George Gallery, Dublin; Private collection Exhibited: Apollo Gallery, Blackrock, Co. Dublin (mid 1980s) Literature: Stairs, Susan, Markey Robinson - A Life in Retrospective, Shorthall-Stairs Publications Dublin, 1998, p.45, catalogue no. 59 (listed and illustrated). Stairs, q.v., writes: “Compositionally, this is similar to Gauguin’s Ta Matete, 1892, but, in Five Women, Markey has said - “they’re in different positions”. Gauguin’s painting features five women seated on a bench (also one standing). In fact, the only figure whose head is turned in a different direction is the second figure from the right who faces to the right in Ta Matete and straight on in Five Women. Markey’s piece is tighter, more compact, with a spartan background of muted grey. Each figure is composed of a few simple shapes of pure colour - the whole structure consists of solid areas of form linked together in the manner of a jigsaw.” Estimate €800-€1,200 (approx. £700-£1,100) Click Here for Large Images & To Bid Lot 109 110 Markey Robinson (1918-1999) NORTH AFRICAN SCENE gouache signed lower right 6 by 13.50in.
