History 45 1843 Loyal National Repeal Association of Ireland, membership certificate. A two-colour (green and black) printed membership card for the Loyal National Repeal Association of Ireland for ‘Mr Zechariah Dowling, admitted a member of the Association the 1 day of May 1943, Thos. Matw. Ray, Secretary’ 1843 was the year Daniel O’Connell declared ‘the year of Repeal’. Dublin Corporation passed a motion in favour of Repeal in February of that year. The Catholic Bishops had come out publicly in support of the Repeal Movement and subscriptions were collected in each Catholic parish in support of the Repeal Association. The Monster Meetings were the most spectacular manifestations of the Association, the meeting on the Hill of Tara in August attracted 800,000 to hear O’Connell. Hand coloured engravings, ‘The Irish Tutor’, O’Connell seated at a schoolmaster’s desk teaching a group of diminutive British politicians, a birch labelled ‘Repeal’ in his back pocket; and ‘A Battering Train’ a group of politicians prepare to break down the door of the House of Lords with a battering ram topped with a likeness of O’Connell. Ship’s log of HMS Terrible including accounts of relief being provided in Ireland Account describes, inter alia, from March 1847 loading stores and bales of clothing with Mr Higgins, agent for the relief association for Belmullet. Other items carried to Ireland for famine relief included seed, bags of bread (35 to 495 at a time), sacks of barley, seed oats, swede, parsnip and turnip seed. Later entries refer to the 1848 Irish Rebellion and the Crimean War. A fascinating account of relief efforts during the famine.
