History 82 Lieutenant Colonel Brian Surtees Philpotts (1875-1917) DSO, Royal Engineers, his Captain’s parade dress uniform. Comprising tunic, trousers and sword belt. The son the headmaster of Bedford School, Brian Surtees Philpotts was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant Royal Engineers in 1895. He rose through the ranks and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1916 and made a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order in January 1917. He was severely wounded in action on 2 September 1917 and died of hid wounds two days later. Philpotts is buried in the Dozinghem Military Cemetary, Poperinge, Belgium. Estimate €300-€400 (approx £270-£360) Click Here for Large Images & To Bid 82 83 1915 (7 May) British propaganda medal to commemorate the sinking of RMS Lusitania, with a 1914-1918 Mercantile Marine medal The famous medal, purporting to have been issued originally in Germany to celebrate the sinking of the Lusitania but actually all were made in England as a propaganda exercise. Accompanied by interesting correspondence from and to Fred Dixon in the 1960s, as well as relevant clippings from newspapers and magazines. Also with this lot a Mercantile Marine Medal to Robert Tracey, who is not listed as crew of the Lusitania. Provenance Collection of F.E. Dixon Estimate €100-€150 (approx £90-£130) Click Here for Large Images & To Bid 83 84 1918 (10 October) Trio to North Irish Horse private, drowned on RMS Leinster. 1914-15 Star, British War Medal 1914-1918 and British Victory Medal officially inscribed to 1459 Pte S Shiels N. IR. H.; together with copies of War Office service records and of the hand-written Telegram Form notifying Shiels’ family of his loss on board the SS Leinster. RMS Leinster served as the Kingstown-Holyhead mailboat until she was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine UB-123 on 10 October 1918, while bound for Holyhead. She went down just outside Dublin Bay at a point 4 nautical miles (7.4 km) east of the Kish light. Over 500 people perished in the sinking – the greatest single loss of life in the Irish Sea.
