Estimate €150-€200 (approx £130-£180) Click Here for Large Images & To Bid 15 16 Portrait of Field Marshal Sir Samuel Hulse, commander of British forces inWicklow andWexford following the 1798 rebellion. A half length oval portrait miniature, attributed to Sir William John Newton (1785-1869) watercolour on card, in gilt frame. Field Marshal Sir Samuel Hulse (1746-1837) had a long and illustrious military career. As lieutenant general he was sent to Ireland with a brigade of guards at the time of the 1798 rebellion. While he was never actually engaged in putting down the rebellion, as Wicklow andWexford District Commander he was active in the suppression of rebel forces led by General Joseph Holt, Michael Dwyer and James Corcoran. Hulse returned to England in mid-1799 to prepare for the Anglo- Russian invasion of Holland that August. Hulse was appointed Governor of the Royal Hospital Chelsea and Vice-Chamberlain of the Household of King George IV as well as a member of the Privy Council.
