(26 by 45.7cm) Provenance: Collection of James and Alice Murnaghan; Their sale, Christie’s and Mealy’s, 14 October 1999; Private collection The sale of the Murnaghan Collection in 1999, conducted in Dublin by Christie’s and Mealy’s, was one of the most important fine art auctions ever held in Ireland. James Augustine Murnaghan (1881-1973) was an Irish barrister and judge of the Supreme Court of Ireland. He and his wife were avid collectors of paintings, silverware and porcelain. In December 1988, Alice Murnaghan’s home was raided by a gang run by Martin Cahill. Items totalling £288,000 in value were stolen, about half were subsequently recovered. The Murnaghans’main art interest was in European Old Masters and their followers as evidenced by this painting, created by a contemporaraneous follower of Fra Angelico. €3000-€5000 (£2,630-£4,390 approx.)
