37 Mildred Anne Butler RWS (1858-1941) GARDEN SCENES, c.1894-1895 (A PAIR) oil on board; (2) both bear stamp of James Lanham [Artist’ Colourmen / St. Ives, Cornwall] on reverse 9.50 by 6.25in. (24.1 by 15.9cm) Provenance: From the Estate of the artist’s niece, Mrs Doreen Archer-Houblon, Kilmurry House; Her Sale Christies October 1981; Private collection The stamp on the reverse of these works [James Lanham / Artist’ Colourmen / St. Ives, Cornwall] would suggest they were executed c.1894-1895 when the artist was in her mid-thirties. In her late twenties she made annual visits to Belgium, Switzerland, Italy and France. While in Paris she became associated with the Newlyn school and went on to spend the summers of 1894 and 1895 in Newlyn in Cornwall which at that time was the centre for a group of artists who were interested in plein-air subjects. She became associated with the Newlyn School - Norman Garstin’s studio in particular - alongside contemporaries such as Walter Osborne. James Lanham (b.1843) of James Lanham & Co is recorded on the 1891 British census as an Artist- colourman, born in London, married to Lucy and living in the High Street, St Ives. His impact on West Cornwall was strong in that his Gallery was an important presence for the various Land’s End artistic communities. Lanham’s Gallery offered framing, transport, artists’materials and an exhibition space to artists, and although small, was well-known and considered a great asset. Of equal size and framed uniformly. €1500-€2000 (£1,320-£1,750 approx.) Click Here for Large Images & To Bid Lot 37 IRISH & INTERNATIONAL ART · 4 MARCH 2019 AT 6PM
