IMPORTANT IRISH ART · 26 November 2018 AT 6PM 21 William John Leech RHA ROI (1881-1968) REGENT’S PARK, SUMMER, 1937 oil on canvas board signed lower right 10 by 14in. (25.4 by 35.6cm) Provenance: Sotheby’s, London, 9 May 1996, lot 54; Private collection Leech painted his scenes of Regent’s Park mainly empty of people, and as Ferran suggests in her text, this is perhaps the principal reason he painted there in the wintertime. These tranquil scenes of the Royal London park were typically created through Leech’s use of subdued tones of umbers and soft greens, while the edges of the objects or elements in the composition are often blurred and softened. For further reading and examples of the subject see Denise Ferran, William John Leech: An Irish Painter Abroad, NGI, Dublin, 1996, p. 253. €8,000-€ 10,000 (£7,080-£8,850 approx.)
