In gilt blue morocco custom binding and slip case by the Chelsea Bindery, incorporating the original ‘Greek flag’ paper wrappers. Unable to find a publisher in the English speaking world, Ulysses was first published in book form by Shakespeare and Company in Paris in 1922. This first edition appeared on hand-made paper, in blue and white printed wrappers in an edition of only 1,000 copies. Ulysses was an immediate success. The first printing sold out, and within a year Joyce had become a well-known literary figure. It was, however, initially banned in the U.K. and in Ireland.
