Fairbairn Sykes commando dagger, the double edged blade of diamond cross-section with brass guard and ribbed alloy blade, with J Nowill & Sons maker’s mark, in leather two-tone scabbard. The blade stamped ‘Germany’ and etched with a harp above Cltic interlace motif surrounding the badge of Óglaigh na hÉireann set in a sunburst, on brass hilt with Óglaigh na hÉireann badge, with wire- bound fishskin grip, in leather-bound scabbard. Sword length Francis J Dunne joined the Irish Army as a private during the Emergency and, unusually, took the Cadet Examination in 1944. He was commissioned in 1946.
