Section of the original Atlantic Cable laid off Valentia Island in July 1865, mounted in brass bands, with gilt inscription, “Telegraph Construction & Maintenance Company” and “Contractors London - Atlantic Shore End 1865”. Also with an attractive lithographic printed invitation to John Chatterton “to inspect the Atlantic Telegraph Cable on board The Great Eastern, now lying off Sheerness on the 17th June, 1865”. Signature of John O’Mahony in plate. Rare. Printed by Continental Bank Note Printing Company of New York. These bonds were issued in America to fund the Fenian Rising of 1867 and were ‘redeemable six months after the acknowledgement of the Independence of the Irish Nation’. They were redeemed almost eighty years later by the Irish Government. Slabbed by PMG and graded “About uncirculated”. Printed by Continental Bank Note Printing Company of New York. These bonds were issued in America to fund the Fenian Rising of 1867. They were redeemed almost eighty years later by the Irish Government. Any outstanding bonds were thereafter valued only as collectibles.
