18th to 20th Century 93 Arthur MacMurrough Kavanagh ‘The Limbless’, archive. Includes, ‘A sketch of the life of Art MacMurrogh Kavanagh’, Irish Messenger, 1921; a file compiled by his land agent James Devine in response to letter, dated 1874, from R.I.C. Constable T. Guilfoyle requesting some ‘autographed notes or mementos of Mr Kavanagh’; letter from James Butler, Kilkenny Castle to Arthur, initialled by Arthur on the back with statement ‘I recommended Shanahan A.K.’ a letter with picture pasted of Carlow Castle believed to have been taken by Arthur and signed ‘Arthur’; a copy of the 1855 Last Will and Testament of Arthur; documents relating to Borris Petty Sessions, Indentures, Land Transactions, Elections, Appointment of Constabulary etc. includes a statement from Bridget Halloran of Knocklinegad stating how she was inveigled by Edward Fitzpatrick to accompany him to Fr Cummins house in Myshall to get married, upon arrival they found the priest in bed. Fitzpatrick then said he would take her to the priests in Newtownbarry but 3 miles along the road he raped her and robbed her of two shillings, halfpenny and then told her ‘she might go to the devil’. The three page octavo letter from the leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party at 2 North Great George’s Street, Dublin, to Dr Brown, refusing an invitation, the photographic glass slide of a head and shoulders portrait of Dillon; the medal obverse with bust of John Dillon MP flanked by sprigs of shamrock, and reverse with hands clasped in friendship beneath a harp and dated 1887, ‘Plan of Campaign - God Save Ireland. Some attributed to William Baker and John Burke. Includes photograph of the celebrated and controversial Sir Frances Younghusband, pictured holding the hand of his 6 year-old daughter outside The Residency in Kashmir from whence he wrote the book “Kashmir” in 1908. Images including the State Elephant of Kashmir with attendants, Polo game, houseboat with boatmen, the harsh beauty of the Kashmir scenery; plus four other pictures from same period of scenes in Algeria, Italy and Sicily.
