The medal to an unknown recipient; accompanied by a 1943 (January 22) letter from the Department of Defence, referring to Service Medal applications with regard to III Tipperary Brigade. By repute to John Redmond, Irish Citizen Army and IRA. John Redmond was born on the 20th of June 1892. He was a member of the IRB and took part in the Howth Gun-Running in July 1914. In 1916 he fought in Fairview and the GPO and vicinity. After the surrender he was arrested but released four days later. He he-joined the Irish Citizen Army but in 1919 he transferred into the IRA and undertook armed patrols. He took the Pro-Treaty side in the Civil War and joined the National Army in May 1922 and served until discharged from the Defence Forces on the 10th of January 1924.
