Fitzgerald - Special Infantry Corps - To the Band - 1st Aug 1923”, stamped ‘9ct’ and hallmarked for Dublin, 1923, maker’s mark ‘E.J’ for Edmund Johnston. in fitted case; together with a photograph of the Brass and Reed Band - Portobello Barrack, with key to the names of the band members; and a copy of a photograph of Marino Dublin Boys Brass Band with their conductor Liam Devlin. A Swiss-made watch in filled gold half-hunter case, retailed by Jameson, Dublin, engraved, ‘J J McKeon - 8.9.27’. Provenance: Reputed to have been given by McKeown to John Collins, Ballymoe, Co. Galway. Gifted to the current owner. Seán Mac Eoin (1893-1973) blacksmith, soldier and Fine Gael politician was born John Joseph McKeon. He came to prominence in the War of Independence as leader of an IRA flying column. Following independence he served as Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces from February to October 1929; as Minister for Defence briefly in 1951 and from 1954 to 1957 and Minister for Justice from 1948 to 1951. He unsuccessfully stood twice as candidate for the office of President of Ireland, against Seán T. O’Kelly in 1945, and Éamon de Valera in 1959.
