IMPORTANT IRISH ART · 27 MAY AT 6PM 53 Moila Powell (1895-1994) MOUNTAINS FROM NORAH MCGUINNESS’S COTTAGE oil on board signed with initials lower right; with exhibition label on reverse 19 by 23.50in. (48.3 by 59.7cm) This expressionist painter with a distinguished Irish family background, was born in India and started life as a miniaturist painter with royal connections. Whilst living in India in 1930 Powell met the painter Nora McGuinness and they became close friends. McGuinness stated that Moila Powell was her only pupil, and under her tutelage she became a talented artist enjoying the expressionist style that McGuiness had developed, having studied under André L’Hôte in Paris. The two became lifelong friends and would often paint side by side until Nora McGuiness’s death in 1980.
