WHYTE'S IRISH & INTERNATIONAL ART MONDAY 16 SEPTEMBER 2019 AT 6PM

IRISH & INTERNATIONAL ART · 16 September 2019 AT 6PM 99 Basil Blackshaw HRHA RUA (1932-2016) TREE oil on canvas 46 by 38in. (116.8 by 96.5cm) Eamonn Mallie, Blackshaw’s biographer and friend, wrote these observations following a discussion with the artist circa 2008: There is always in Blackshaw’s late work a screen (not a physical screen) between reality and what he paints even though what he commits to board or canvas is routed in reality. He likes to remove himself from the immediacy of the image to find that ‘otherness’ of his subject. This largish work is all about paint, marks, painting, edges, the density of the paint, stains and literal jabs of colour all speaking for themselves in some instinctual way. This is a very Blackshaw painting. Under pressure to say something about the work the artist remarked ‘there is nothing to say about this work other than it is a good painting’.
