WHYTE'S IRISH & INTERNATIONAL ART 2 December 2019
160 139 Dennis B. Sheahan (American, fl. 1870-1900) JOHN PHILPOT CURRAN, 1895 copper relief panel signed and dated lower left 11 by 10.75in. (27.9 by 27.3cm) Dennis B. Sheahan evidently had an Irish connection, for in 1879 he was commissioned by the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick to sculpt a bust of the poet Thomas Moore, which now stands in Central Park, New York. Other recorded works include a 27 inch high standing statue of Daniel O’Connell (sold through Skinner’s, Massachusetts, 1997) and a marble bust of the engineer Joseph Harrison Jnr in the Pennsyl- vania Academy for the Fine Arts. Sheahan earned a degree of notoriety for his forgeries of eighteenth century sundials and scientific equipment, which had become highly collectible by the late 1880s and proved a lucrative sideline industry. €1,500-€2,000 (£1,290-£1,720 approx.)
