(54.6 by 66cm) Provenance: Sheppard’s, Durrow, c. 1973; Private collection Exhibited: Daniel Egan’s Gallery, Dublin, August 1926 Paula MacWhite (nee Gruttner) was a Danish artist who studied in Paris, where she met and married, in 1921, the Irish diplomat Michael MacWhite (1883 - 1958). Michael MacWhite was Ireland’s the Irish Free State’s first plenipotentiary to the League of Nations (now the United Nations) in Geneva (from 1921-1929). In 1929 he was appointed Minister Plenipotentiary and Envoy Extraordinary to the United States based at Washington DC. Between 1938-1950 MacWhite was appointed as the Irish Free State’s Minister Plenipotentiary and Envoy Extraordinary to Italy. €1,000-€1,500 (£850-£1,270 approx.)
