38 29 Daniel O’Neill (1920-1974) BIRD’S NEST, 1950 oil on canvas signed upper left; inscribed with artist name, title and original owner ‘s name on Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, Massachusetts label on reverse; also dated [1950] in pencil on reverse 14 by 18in. (35.6 by 45.7cm) Frame: 18 by 22in. (46 by 56cm.) Condition: Good stable condition. Some minor surface dirt visible. Areas of impasto appear intact and stable. Painting is presented unglazed in what appears to be its original frame. Provenance: David Rago, 09 Nov 2019 Lambertville NJ, United States Private collection, Virginia; David Rego, American & European Art, 9 November 2019, Lambertville, New Jersey, lot 748; Private collection Exhibited: Boston Institute for Contemporary Art, 1950 Daniel O’Neill’s work had been exhibited in 1947 New York as part of a group show in association with the American Artists Galleries and the following year in a group show held in Los Angeles. In 1950, his dealer Victor Waddington organised a travelling group exhibition in America, which included Daniel O’Neill, Gerard Dillon and George Campbell in association with the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, and New Irish Painters.
