142 History 261 1921 (14 March) Photograph of TomWhelan after his arrest with two Auxiliaries. Rare photograph pasted onto a card with manuscript note “Tom Whelan Co. Tipp murdered after Bloody Sunday roundup”. Also with a photograph of 1916 Rebel Edward Daly. (2 items) Condition: The Whelan photo faded, otherwise very good. Thomas Whelan was arrested on 23 November 1920 and, on 1 February 1921, he was charged with the death by shooting on “Bloody Sunday” 1920 of Captain GT Baggallay, an army prosecutor who had been a member of courts that sentenced Volunteers to death under the Restoration of Order in Ireland Regulations. Despite having an alibi that he was at Mass at the time of the assassination Whelan was found guilty of murder and was hanged on 14 March 1921. A monochrome sepia print of the “Black & Tans” base at Gormanston by Bobinchak and Bolot , Rathmines, Dublin. Inscribed in the plate “View of R-I-C Camp Gormanston From No. 1 Hanger, October 27 1921. Condition: Edge tears, creased, slight stains, overall very good. In 1917 the camp was set up as a Royal Flying Corps training depot. On 1 April 1918 the RFC was amalgamated with the Royal Naval Air Service to form the Royal Air Force and the airfield became RAF Station, Gormanston. After the war the aerodrome was closed and by January 1920 the remaining aircraft were transferred to RAF Baldonnel. From August 1920 to August 1922 Gormanston was used by the Royal Irish Constabulary “Black and Tans” as a sub-depot for the training of new recruits, and as a despatch centre to send units of Black and Tans to various parts of Ireland. The evacuation of the force was completed by August 1922, and the camp was handed over to the National Army. This was during the Irish Civil War which started on 28 June 1922. Gormanston then became the Headquarters of the Transport Section of the National Army with the ceremonial opening of Gormanston on 8 October 1922 Estimate €200-€300 (approx £180-£270) Click here for more images and to bid on this lot 262
