155 History THE ECLECTIC COLLECTOR · 25 & 26 JULY 2020 285 1929 Centenary of Catholic Emancipation. Vestments worn by one of the priests at the commemorative Mass. Includes chasuble and two stoles, especially made for this event, also a portion of the altar covering. Given to a descendant of Daniel O’Connell; thence by descent to the present owner. Condition: Very good. These vestments were worn on Sunday 24 June 1929, at celebrations to mark the centenary of Catholic Emancipation which ended in Dublin with a Pontifical High Mass in the Phoenix Park attended by 300,000 people, and a procession to Watling Street Bridge followed by Benediction. (35) An interesting collection of Irish Free State scenes, including march by “The White Army”, the Eucharistic Congress, the Blueshirts including women Blueshirts, farmers strike, various riots and demonstrations in Dublin and Belfast, 1932 royal visit to Belfast, Eamon de Valera visit to London 1938, 1933 election meetings, 1939 IRA bomb attack in London, 1938 takeover of British naval base in Cork, etc. , mostly 6 x 8 inch monochrome prints with detailed captions attached to reverse of each one.
