18 History 23 1769 pair of silver tankards engraved with coat of arms believed to be that of Bernard, the Earl of Bandon Hallmarked crowned harp, Hibernia, andW. Condition: Fine. The coat of arms is Argent on a bend azure three escallops of the field; crest: a demi lion argent holding a snake proper. This is very similar to the coat of arms of Bernard, Earl of Bandon (see both Debrett’s Complete Peerage and Burke’s Peerage), lacking only the supporters and motto. Based on the Family Bernard lineage, the date of the tankards and the coat of arms, the tankards could have originally belonged to one of the following members of the Family Bernard: Francis Bernard (1698-1783) MP, of Castle Bernard, or His nephew James Bernard (1729-1790) MP for Cork, or The latter’s son Francis Bernard (1755-1830), Baron Bandon, Viscount Bandon, Viscount Bernard and Earl of Bandon.
