181 History THE ECLECTIC COLLECTOR · 25 & 26 JULY 2020 333 1971-1972. Provisional Sinn Fein propaganda overprints on UK postage stamps - a specialised collection. Compiled by Pádraig Ó Mathúna this comprehensive collection includes large unused blocks, overprinted stamps used on envelopes posted in Northern Ireland and in Great Britain, some postmarked, others marked by the Post Office as illegal. A very interesting collection including correspondence with the Irish Republican Philatelic Office secretary, Sean de Faoite, and with philatelists in Ireland and the USA, and a publication on the stamps issued by The American Philatelic Society. Also included are essays for stamps to be issued in “Free Derry” by the Provisionals. Estate of Pádraig Ó Mathúna Condition: Mainly fine to very fine. The overprints were “SAOIRSE EIREANN /FIGHT FOR UNITED IRELAND / 1921-1971” on the Ulster ‘71 commemorative 3p issue, “SUPPORT SINN FEIN” on 2½p and “DAIL ULADH” on 3p Northern Ireland regional issues and “I gCuimhne Doire” on 3p Northern Ireland regional issue. Dail Uladh was a proposed regional parliament under a Sinn Fein plan for a United Ireland with four self governing regions. “I gCuimhne DOIRE / 30.1.72”was in memory of the Bloody Sunday victims. The overprints succeeded in getting widespread publicity ; questions were raised in the House of Commons by Enoch Powell MP among others and the Post Office took steps to stop the “defaced” stamps from being used.
