Inscribed “The Gift of Richard Shackleton to his daughter Sarah Shackleton In the year1770”. A very rare first edition signed by Goldsmith. Sarah Shackleton; Thence by descent to the present owner. Condition: Slight foxing on title page, tiny thread holes at edge from being previously bound with other publications., fine. Worldcat lists a total of only 11 examples of this edition (not stated whether author signed): one copy in Ireland, at Trinity College Dublin; three copies in the UK - Universities of London, Cambridge and Oxford; 6 in the USA - Harvard, Huntington, Michigan State, University of Chicago, Wellesley College and Yale; one in Canada - McMaster University, Hamilton.
