50 History 63 1848 ‘Young Irelanders’ Rebellion. An Irish pike by David Hyland, Dublin. Pike with original stout octagonal ash handle, Made by Hyland Dublin. The pike head 24 inches in length, the handle 56 inches, of which 8 inches inside the head, overall 72 inches in length. pike head stamped HYLAND. Condition: Very good. The Young Irelanders’ pikes were made in the same way as those of 1798. In Dublin, Hyland, the best known of all the pike makers, had “ several men constantly employed in manufacturing pikes “ Hyland produced what were undoubtedly the best weapons of their kind ever to be made in Ireland. “Pike maker, by appointment, to the Castle,”The Nation called him, in ironical allusion to the Government discomfiture over a bogus order given him as a test of his activities by an official. It has to be said about the only weapon which might typically deserve the name of “Irish Pike “ was this type, made by Hyland especially for the 1848 Rebellion. In general, it may be said that it is not possible to date any Irish pike which does not bear a maker’s mark, with the exception, that is, of the few pikes which have survived in the ownership of families which originally acquired them and are accompanied by proof of their origin.
