100 History 148 1914“Howth”Mauser rifle as used in the 1916 Rising and TheWar of Independence. A Mauser Infantry Rifle Model 1871, single shot, 11mm, black powder rifle, serial number 55, dated 1874, 1875. One of eight Howth Mauser rifles used in both 1935 and 1966, by firing parties composed of 1916 veterans, to fire a volley outside the General Post Office as part of the Rising Anniversary celebrations. More recently, to celebrate the centenary of the 1916 Rising it was shown at Sinn Fein’s exhibition, Revolution 1916, at the Ambassador Theatre in Dublin.
